Rachel Rhys McKinnon

Welcome

I obtained my PhD from the Department of Philosophy at the University of Waterloo, where I am currently working as an adjunct professor. My research focuses on norms of assertion. I am interested in understanding the epistemic dimensions of what we assert to each other, and the relevant norms potentially governing the practice. This work includes working on how to properly evaluate performances such as placing wagers, shooting an arrow, and making decisions. It also includes work on the nature of luck and its role in our evaluations of performances.

I am also particularly interested in pedagogy and developing effective teaching methodologies for philosophy. I have completed the Certificate in University Teaching from the UW Centre for Teaching Excellence. One area of interest is the uptake of technology in teaching philosophy such as Twitter and iClickers, both of which I use in my teaching. The use of Twitter was included in UW CTE's "Task Force on Innovative Teaching Practices to Promote Deep Learning."
