Bienvenue/Welcome

This study tour was composed of students from Wilfrid Laurier University, who were chosen as part of an annual tour that was established by former WLU Chancellor John Cleghorn. They were joined by students from Universite de Montreal studying with Michel Fortmann and Carl Bouchard. The tour is intended to introduce students to aspects of strategic, operational and tactical problems encountered in the First and Second World Wars.  A secondary purpose is to examine the ways in which the combatant nations have constructed a usable memory of their experience, especially in military cemeteries, monuments and museums.  The focus is on the Canadians but we also considered the American, British, French, German and Polish wartime experience.

The material on this site includes an itinerary, and some of the materials and reading lists used by the students to prepare for the tour.
